I don't have the words to express, so I'll share these words from Georgia and Miri's Haven Senior Dog Rescue @mirishaven

Gypsy Rose • Chicken Wing

Yesterday, we had to do the hardest thing we ever have to ask our hearts to do. We said goodbye to one of our forever residents at the Haven ~ our sweet Gypsy Rose. Our beloved Chicken Wing.

After a very courageous battle with kidney disease, she departed wrapped in her mama Georgia’s arms and surrounded by all the love we could give her. We weren’t ready to let her go, but love sometimes means carrying the heartbreak so they don’t have to carry the pain of a body failing slowly.

Gypsy came into this world with her unforgettable little chicken wing front leg and no foot. So many people knew her because of her extraordinary leggie. She became proof that the rarest, most extraordinary dogs don’t have to come from breeders ~ they’re waiting in shelters and rescues, hoping someone sees what makes them special.

But that little wing wasn’t her whole story.

Her story was resilience, joy in the face of every obstacle, and teaching us that a body doesn’t have to be textbook perfect to live a beautiful life. She never wasted a single day feeling sorry for herself. She welcomed every dog who came through our doors, loved trotting around in her UV-proof shirts through the yard, and even cuddled with Cornelius once. ONCE.

Thank you to every single person who stopped by to give Gypsy a potty break, cheered her on, and donated toward her medical care when she arrived. You helped make her life so much bigger than we ever imagined.

Run free now, sweet Chickie Wing. Find all of our beloved Miri’s Haven friends waiting for you. We like to think they’re already showing you the best sunny spots.

Until we meet again, precious Chickie. We love you forever.

I was so happy to find this little box turtle hang I was so happy to find this little box turtle hanging out at my wildlife sanctuary today—finding the food, water, and shelter she needs to survive.

Eastern box turtles can spend their whole lives, sometimes more than 50 years, in a small area about the size of a few football fields. Because of severe habitat fragmentation and road mortality, they are listed as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Maryland. ©Kathy Milani 2026

How you can help right now:
1. Give turtles a brake: We are in the middle of peak nesting season, and turtles are actively crossing roads to find mates and lay eggs. Drive carefully near wooded areas.
2. Help them cross safely: If you see a turtle on the road and it is safe to pull over, gently carry them all the way across in the exact direction they were already heading. Turning them around or relocating them triggers their homing instinct, causing them to wander lost and try to cross the road again.
3. Do a lawn sweep: Always check tall grass for hidden wildlife before mowing your yard.

Yet even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, their colleagues continued reporting the news, a testament to the resilience of local journalism and the enduring importance of a free press.

Today, we remember Rebecca Smith, Wendi Winters, Rob Hiaasen, Gerald Fischman, and John McNamara.

My heart aches for the Haitian community, who are My heart aches for the Haitian community, who are once again facing an uncertain future in the U.S. after yesterday's Supreme Court ruling allowing the Trump administration to end TPS protections.

I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with many people from Haiti, and they are some of the most incredibly warm, welcoming, and generous people I have ever met. While many have faced extreme hardship, they are resilient, proud, and hardworking.

From Montgomery County to the Eastern Shore, Maryland has over 20,000 Haitian residents. ©Kathy Milani 2026

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTE: Deportations do NOT start today. TPS holders have a transitional window to seek alternative legal options.
🏛️ Where to get help: Haitian residents can seek guidance from trusted legal service providers and the Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center. Those on the Eastern Shore have incredible local resources, such as Rebirth Inc. and the Haitian Development Center of Delmarva in Salisbury.
