I was so happy to find this little box turtle hang I was so happy to find this little box turtle hanging out at my wildlife sanctuary today—finding the food, water, and shelter she needs to survive.

Eastern box turtles can spend their whole lives, sometimes more than 50 years, in a small area about the size of a few football fields. Because of severe habitat fragmentation and road mortality, they are listed as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Maryland. ©Kathy Milani 2026

How you can help right now:
1. Give turtles a brake: We are in the middle of peak nesting season, and turtles are actively crossing roads to find mates and lay eggs. Drive carefully near wooded areas.
2. Help them cross safely: If you see a turtle on the road and it is safe to pull over, gently carry them all the way across in the exact direction they were already heading. Turning them around or relocating them triggers their homing instinct, causing them to wander lost and try to cross the road again.
3. Do a lawn sweep: Always check tall grass for hidden wildlife before mowing your yard.

During extreme heat, wildlife depends on small refuges like shade and fresh water. A simple bowl of clean water can make a real difference for squirrels, birds, frogs, and countless other wild neighbors.

This Green Frog's rhythmic throat movement, called buccal pumping, helps him breathe by moving air into his lungs. It may also provide a small cooling benefit through evaporation. Frogs also absorb oxygen through their wet skin.

U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin, who represents Mary U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin, who represents Maryland's 8th Congressional District, recently visited Rosie's Farm Sanctuary in Potomac during a Compassionate Cookout event hosted in partnership with @beyondmeat.

A longtime advocate for animal protection, Congressman Raskin spent time with rescued cows Micky and Moose while learning more about the sanctuary's mission of providing lifelong care for rescued farmed animals.

The Compassionate Cookout brought together lawmakers, nonprofit leaders, authors, creatives, and supporters to explore ways to build a more compassionate food system. ©Kathy Milani 2026

Eight years ago today, five members of the Capital Eight years ago today, five members of the Capital Gazette were gunned down in their newsroom in Annapolis—the deadliest attack on journalists in U.S. history.

Yet even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, their colleagues continued reporting the news, a testament to the resilience of local journalism and the enduring importance of a free press.

Today, we remember Rebecca Smith, Wendi Winters, Rob Hiaasen, Gerald Fischman, and John McNamara.

My heart aches for the Haitian community, who are My heart aches for the Haitian community, who are once again facing an uncertain future in the U.S. after yesterday's Supreme Court ruling allowing the Trump administration to end TPS protections.

I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with many people from Haiti, and they are some of the most incredibly warm, welcoming, and generous people I have ever met. While many have faced extreme hardship, they are resilient, proud, and hardworking.

From Montgomery County to the Eastern Shore, Maryland has over 20,000 Haitian residents. ©Kathy Milani 2026

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTE: Deportations do NOT start today. TPS holders have a transitional window to seek alternative legal options.
🏛️ Where to get help: Haitian residents can seek guidance from trusted legal service providers and the Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center. Those on the Eastern Shore have incredible local resources, such as Rebirth Inc. and the Haitian Development Center of Delmarva in Salisbury.

Billy is currently in foster care with City Dogs R Billy is currently in foster care with City Dogs Rescue and is looking for his forever home.

Not quite ready to adopt? Consider fostering instead. Fosters provide a safe, loving temporary home while helping rescue dogs prepare for adoption—and every foster home opens the door for another dog in need to be saved.

Fostering gives rescue dogs a chance to live in a home environment while they wait for adoption, and many rescue groups rely on foster families to save more animals. @cdckrescue
